Patient Counseling About Using Herbal Products

People nowadays are becoming aware of the many things their doctors would only know, like treatments and medications for specific illnesses. The internet has paved the way for all information to be available to the public. It is beneficial when it comes to treating minor ailments such as cold and flu, cough and fever, but people should be more careful when dealing with more complicated illnesses like cancer, diabetes, and cancer. These conditions require thorough care from a doctor.

A Counselor’s Take On Herbal Therapy

I have been going to therapy for two years now, and I’ve had only one counselor since the beginning. My depression for the past year has definitely improved with counseling and medications. Still, I wanted to find a healthier alternative to the medicines I took for a year now. One day, I came across an article about herbal therapy, and I got interested in a solution to my dilemma. When it was time for me to visit my counselor, I asked her about it. “Would you consider recommending me herbal therapy for my depression?”

My counselor explained to me that she was pro-wellness, and whatever remedies could help me alleviate the anxiety and depression I had been experiencing, she would like me to give it a try. So we read together and found more information about herbal therapy.

Herbal Therapy

We found statements from a reputable doctor by Christopher Hobbs, who said in one of his interviews that herbal therapy could help one attain his wellness goals. He continued to explain that because herbalists are certified in the health field and utilize non-toxic natural remedies. The medical doctor in disease or pathology, both of these practitioners collaborating, might provide patients with more options.

Conditions That Herbal Therapy Can Be Used For

By promoting wellness and improving each individual’s stress response, the herbal specialist can help alleviate wellness problems, including:

  • Persistent flu
  • Pregnancy, childbirth, menopause, pregnancy, and PMS
  • Digestion problems like colitis and Crohn’s disease
  • Fatigue, depression, tension, stress, and anxiety
  • Lung problems, such as chronic bronchitis
  • Sexual problems
  • Skin issues
  • Decreasing the negative effects of current medications
  • Nervousness
  • Alleviation of addictive behavior

Phytotherapy Explained

Phytotherapy is a subcategory of herbal therapy, which basically means plant therapy. Physiotherapists depend on modern studies and trials, but they respect the experience and background of herbalists, which date back hundreds of years. They utilize this method to improve the wellness of different body systems to increase general well-being.

Healing Philosophy

Herbal therapy’s primary healing philosophy is to provide you the assistance required to regain your capacity to establish harmony and equilibrium in your mental, physical, and emotional health. Its health assessment emphasizes recognizing patterns of weakness and strength. With this information and upon the clients’ desires, the clinical herbalist will list suggestions, including herbs, natural remedies, counseling, lifestyle modifications, yoga, nutrition, and skill-building activities.

Is It Right For You?

You can consider herbal therapy if you want to:

  • Reduce or completely stop your present medication doses (with the approval and supervision of your primary physician).
  • Complement your present medications to attain better results compared to what you are getting from your current medications.
  • Augment medication compliance.
  • Seek options that decrease the negative side effects of your present medications naturally.

Benefits Of Herbal Treatments

There are many benefits of using herbal treatments, and the three major ones are listed below.

They Possess Healing Properties. Herbal treatments can be utilized for acute and chronic illnesses, including prostate issues, lowered immune system, depression, and cardiovascular problems.

Cost-Effective Treatment. Herbal remedies are more affordable compared to pharmaceuticals. A relevant reason why trying out herbal treatments with the supervision of an herbalist has been so famous is because people merely can’t afford the cost of their medications. Consulting with an experienced herbalist does not essentially imply that you can immediately stop your regular medications. The herbalist will work intimately with you to decrease your medications when your primary physician clears you.

It Is More Convenient. Herbs are categorized as dietary supplements, which is why they can be bought over the counter as essential oils, herbal teas, and herbal extracts. These can be bought at most supermarkets and health food stores. Be sure that you carefully read the labels of these items before using them.

Herbal Treatments For Depression And Anxiety

My counselor stressed that each of us is different, but studies indicate that several herbs can work to manage depression and anxiety. You can find sources on the web on the effectiveness of these herbs and supplements, including their safety profiles.

Natural Remedies Combined With Medications

When integrating all the studies on herbal therapy, the outcomes show that herbal treatments augment patient compliance with consuming synthetic medicines, assist them in stopping or lowering medication doses, address some of the deleterious side effects of medications, offer an extra option to individuals who do not react well to medications and enhance the positive effects of their medications. When this method is integrated with the appropriate supplements and a positive lifestyle, the outcomes can be amazing.

Are They Right For You?

Herbal therapy, indeed, does not cure everything. Herbal formulations can help you tackle several symptoms, frequently quite swiftly. The principal emphasis of herbal therapy is tackling the underlying wellness concerns that trigger the onset of these symptoms. Examples of conditions that herbal therapy addresses effectively include hormonal imbalances, stress, some sexual dysfunction cases, minor to moderate insomnia, minor to moderate anxiety that is not secondary to a medical disorder, and minor to moderate depression that is not due to a medical disorder.

Combining Counseling And Medication Therapy For Depression

Just more than a generation ago, the typical tandem of medication therapy and psychotherapy and other forms of counseling seemed unattainable. Psychiatry was opposed by political and ideological struggles between biologic psychiatry and psychoanalysis, particularly in the United States. Psychoanalysts from the said country were inclined to consider psychopharmacology as a mediocre therapy that covered over issues instead of tackling them head-on. They agreed that indications inhibited by medications would gradually be substituted by others that are similarly debilitating.

In turn, advocates of biologic psychiatry frequently see psychoanalysis as a type of trickery that was an expensive waste of time at best and increased suffering that psychopharmacologists were attempting to improve.

Pros Of Combined Counseling and Medication Therapy

Ever since, several studies have found combined therapy for depression to have a lot of pros compared to single-modality therapy. This applies to psychodynamic therapy and interpersonal therapies, which is a manual descendent of psychodynamic therapy. The indications were not very clear for cognitive behavioral therapy, with numerous previous studies revealing only insignificant tendencies towards an advantage of combined therapies. It seems, however, that this might suggest restrictions in study designs common of that period. Some studies have also shown a benefit to using pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy.

So does this indicate that every patient manifesting with depression must be encouraged to have psychotherapy in conjunction with medications? In a typical world with limitless resources, this could be possible. Conversely, considerations must be made about the cost/benefit ratio. Although combined therapies are more effective compared to stand-alone treatments, the effects are largely unassertive. Statistically substantial disparities might not be clinically relevant. With the extra tension and stress of giving combined treatments on inadequate mental health services, it might be more advantageous to offer medication therapy and counseling and other forms of psychotherapies to individuals who have a higher likelihood of showing significant outcomes.

Patients Who Respond Better To Combined Therapy

Though evidence on combined therapy is still quite small, some guidance has been seen regarding which individuals with depression have a higher likelihood of gaining remarkable benefits. Patients with major depression, dysfunctional cognitions, and chronic depression all present more clinically significant and strong responses to medications combined with psychotherapy.

An insufficient reaction to single-modality therapy is another reason to take into account combine therapy. Individuals with depression that does not respond well to antidepressants alone present an increased response when the treatment is combined with psychotherapy. In addition, those who do not respond to psychotherapy gain extra benefits when complemented with antidepressants.

It is important to note that these classifications of patients usually get therapy from psychiatrists. With more and more antidepressants being prescribed by medical professionals who are not psychiatrists, the psychiatrists usually see patients with more chronic, major, and therapy-resistant illnesses and those with treatments convoluted by maladaptive personality types and unusual behaviors.

What Makes It Better?

Experts have yet to know more about the superiority of combined therapy. Some benefits may ensue merely from additive effects. Every therapy is effective in itself. Hence, complementing the efficacy of each offers a collective impact. There could also be collaborative effects that have led to the superior effectiveness of combined therapy. For instance, pharmacotherapy might make more individuals more accessible for therapy by alleviating treatment-intrusive issues like debilitating anxiety, depression, and psychosis.

Current evidence implies that there could also be other more directly biological effects. Among the neurobiological effects of antidepressants is apparently increased neural turnover, with trimming of dendritic synapses and increasing sprouting. This interesting research indicates that antidepressants might make for increased plastic neural channels, which could, in turn, permit for more fast learning, like in psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy and other forms of counseling could also improve the efficacy of medication therapy. One method where this may happen is by enhanced compliance. Numerous studies have established that patients receiving psychotherapy and medications have a reduced amount of medication treatment cessation. Simultaneous therapy could also enhance the therapeutic alliance and augment patient approval with treatment.

The therapeutic union, in turn, does have a profound impact on the effectiveness of antidepressants. Furthermore, the psychosomatically anxious patient vulnerable to negative medication responses could gain attention to psychological backgrounds or somatic responses.

Combined therapy has been proven to be more efficient than single-modality therapies and adequately more effective for specific types of patients. Still, more research needs to be performed to confirm whether or not there are other categories of patients suffering from depression who would gain from combined therapy.

There is ultimately a lot more to learn about particular factors, such as treatment combination, that may lead to increased therapy effectiveness or combined therapy.

Mental Health Before, During, And After Acupuncture

I looked for an acupuncturist to treat my aching muscles. I found the best one in town online, but they only had an available slot a week after I called. I grabbed it at once because I genuinely wanted to stop taking pain relievers whenever my muscles ached. I even wrote the date, address, and time on my calendar so that I would not miss it.

As soon as I ended the call, though, that’s when it hit me. I just agreed to have a stranger – albeit a professional – to prick me with God knows how many needles!

My brain began to come up with a million and one things that could go wrong during the process. What if someone comes in to surprise the acupuncturist while the needle is close to my skin and ends up pushing the needle deeper than intended? What if his hand begins to shake or he has a moment of doubt and pricks me at the wrong point? What if he had an awful assistant and forgot that the needle they prepared had already been used?

Of course, I refused to believe that professionals could ever do that, but doesn’t the saying go, “To err is human”? This thought kept me on my toes for days.

I was scheduled to meet the acupuncturist at 2 o’clock in the afternoon on a Wednesday. I initially wanted to go there alone; none of my family members even knew that I was set to get acupuncture. I did not think that they would agree to it, especially since I came from a family of doctors. However, I genuinely needed moral support, so I called my best friend, who always had a support-first-ask-questions-later attitude. I gave her the clinic’s address, and she called in sick at work to be there for me. (I got super lucky in the BFF department, I know.)

My best friend’s presence soothed my nerves enough to push myself to take a step towards the reception desk in the lobby. Once I confirmed my appointment, we sat at the farthest line of chairs to wait for them to call my name. Neither of us had been in a facility that offered traditional Chinese medicine, so we were both surprised to realize that the clinic was inside a mini-hospital, complete with nurses in scrubs. Everything was white and clean; everyone smiled kindly. The TV even showed the various treatments they offered there.

At precisely 2 o’clock, I went to the second floor, where the acupuncturist’s clinic was located. Upon getting my vitals, the elderly man informed me that he was not only an acupuncturist but also a medical doctor who specialized in joints and muscles. That eased my mind as I thought, “He must know what he’s doing.” But then, the nerves flared up when he said that he would use 20 acupuncture needles on me.

Not two but 20! My best friend could only squeeze my hand in assurance as the doctor led me to a table where I was supposed to lie down while getting acupuncture. He was nice enough to pull up a chair for my best friend so that she could sit down, but she stood up right away after realizing that it brought her at eye level with the needles.

Before the first prick, the doctor even showed me the needles he would use up close. They seemed thinner than most I had seen. Then, he positioned a needle on top of the knee and gave it a little tap.

I expected a sting – as if several ants bit me. However, the needle barely entered my skin, so it would not hurt unless I started moving. The doctor asked how I was doing, and I said I was fine, so he continued placing needles all over my lower body. I even saw a couple of them on the tip of my toes.

My anxiety was almost non-existent at this point. I did not know that I fell asleep until the doctor tapped me on the shoulder to say that he would take the needles out. The process was quick and practically painless, too, and I was scheduled for another acupuncture session two weeks later.

It had been a couple of months ever since my first acupuncture session. After that, I had the confidence to go on my own and share my experience with my family. I thought they would think I was crazy for getting acupuncture, but it turned out that my father was friends with my acupuncturist from med school. Once or twice, Dad accompanied me to the clinic, and he got the same treatment for his migraine and joint pain.

As for the efficacy of acupuncture, I would say that it worked on me. The jury was still out about it for some, but I would not mind getting acupunctured a couple of times a month, especially now that I was no longer scared of the practice.

Help For The Family: Acupuncture And Pediatric Care

Have you heard of acupuncture? It is a form of alternative medicine that utilizes therapeutic needles to target pain points in one’s body for the purpose of pain relief and relaxation. Does this apply to everyone in the family, including children? Yes, it actually does.

The pediatric acupuncturist helps children improve several conditions by creating an appropriate treatment plan that is tailored for your child’s behavior and other needs. Frequently, these treatments are aimed at alleviating or curing problems that you may not have even know that your own child has, including anxiety, stress, insomnia, or allergies. The acupuncturist utilizes a whole-body strategy that typically entails massage, herb intake, acupuncture, and lifestyle modification.

If you are afraid that the process of acupuncture will hurt, please do not worry, as that is not the case at all. Although a majority of people have reported no pain in their experience with acupuncture, there are also other alternative approaches that are less daunting. Cold lasers are among the treatments that are usually considered, as these are used through machines that activate the skin without needle use.

Below we will learn more about how acupuncture therapy, Chinese medicine, and massage can positively affect some common childhood conditions.

Insomnia in children often leads to other worse issues. Lack of appropriate sleep will reduce your child’s ability to focus, recall, and be as active as he wants to be. Since a lot of these conditions can present with a lack of energy and fatigue, parents initially won’t know whether or not their child hasn’t been sleeping very well. Childhood insomnia can be efficiently treated with a combination of Chinese herbs and acupuncture by first looking for the original cause of the problem without using addictive or life-threatening medications.

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine are quite common for treating adult anxiety, but they can actually even be as effective for childhood anxiety as well. Each child deals with stress uniquely, and their stress levels rise up or go down as children grow. Acupuncture treatments help achieve a relaxed and improved state of mind that can possibly be for the long-term if only the treatments are consistent.

ADHD And Other Behavioral Conditions

ADHD, among other behavioral conditions, is typically managed with mood medications. But with the popularity of acupuncture and Chinese medicine combined, people have proven that it is safer and equally effective. An acupuncturist can recommend changes to the child’s eating habits, including his diet and the kinds of supplements that he is taking. These combined therapies are something that one should look into.

This is one of the most common issues in children when they are being potty-trained. Bedwetting can lead to stress in the child much more in the parent. Most kids learn to control their bladder effectively when they reach five, but this is not constant. Each child is different and we blame hormones and neurological problems might be the case.

For kids afflicted with asthma, the acupuncturist can efficiently help reduce the phlegm and wheezing symptoms. This will even be more effective if complemented with Chinese medicine use. The acupuncturist will try to identify the primary causes of asthma as well, and this includes allergies.

Allergic Reactions

Children’s immune systems are not as strong and developed compared to that of adults, and this makes them more susceptible to common conditions such as allergies. A lot of ailments are caused by allergies, including skin infections, asthma, insomnia, and digestive problems. These conditions can be alleviated with acupuncture and Chinese medicine use, bringing quick and efficient relief. Children have been shown to respond pretty well with acupuncture, especially when they are also treated with massage and acupressure.

An infant suffering from colic cries for hours, is fussy and is inconsolable for no reason at all. This usually occurs when the infant is two weeks old. Colic can be very stressful for the child as well as for the parents, who can’t seem to know what to do in order to pacify their baby. Apparently, studies have proven that acupuncture and acupressure therapies can help reduce the instances of colic in infants.

Additionally, acupuncturists can work with the parents in finding possible causes, including food allergies or sensitivity to a particular substance in her diet, which could actually accumulate in her breast milk and affect her infant. Parents who have tried asking help from acupuncturists can attest to the quick relief that their babies get from acupuncture.

Digestive Problems

The sad truth is that infants are born with frail, immature digestive systems. Problems like hyperacidity, colic, and food allergies can be distressing for babies and can possibly affect their sleep. Pediatric-approved Chinese herbs, acupuncture, and acupressure have shown to help relieve minor problems in the digestive system and actually help it grow and develop normally.

With all the conditions mentioned above, we can say that acupuncture does help children in more ways than one. Your child may still be growing in the womb, a newborn, or a young child, these alternative medicines provide a safe and efficient solution and would make a great complement to their pediatric care. You only need to find the right acupuncturist that can work harmoniously with your children’s pediatrician in making sure that they are healthy and free from harm.

Drug Treatment Guidelines For COVID-19

Living in this pandemic time where we are all dealing with COVID-19, everyone worries mainly about the treatment options available in taking care of the virus. Unfortunately, we don’t have any access to the possible drug that can prevent or cure the disease. Though some countries claim to have found the effective drug, these are not approved and not recommended by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

But since it is our human nature to be curious, we want to try and work on something instead of wasting time waiting. That explains why some licensed physicians consider using certain drugs to treat COVID-19 patients. Honestly, these experts cannot wholeheartedly say that the drugs they recommend are the ones necessary for the specific purpose of getting rid of Coronavirus. But with regard to results, most of these drugs show a potential advantage.

Remdesivir – It is a drug that has a wide range of antiviral activities that slow down viral replication. Meaning, it is a drug that helps in the premature termination of RNA transcription. It also has in-vivo and in-vitro activity against related Coronavirus diseases. Honestly, it is a drug that is still under trial but is proven to have retroactivity against certain conditions such as severe acute respiratory syndrome or SARS. Remdesivir contains the necessary chemicals that can help the respiratory system. It went in progress to an evaluation to check the efficacy of the drug for moderate and severe COVID-19 cases. Unfortunately, despite its promising capabilities, its clinical stand is not well-understood.

Tocilizumab – It is a drug that is most widely used by clinicians that are given through the form of injection.  Tocilizumab contains IL-6 receptors responsible for reducing cytokine and acute reactants that are beneficial for fighting Coronavirus infection. Though many clinicians are now engaged in providing the Tocilizumab shots to the patients with mild and severe cases of COVID-19, it is still under investigation. Fortunately, it reached a phase 2 clinical trial so that it can be a promising sign. But then again, it is too early to conclude that this drug holds the future since there is possible drug dependency.

Chloroquine/ Hydroxychloroquine – These are oral prescription drugs that are used for treating malaria and other certain inflammatory conditions. Both of the drugs have an in-vitro and in-vivo activity against SARS Co-1 and SARS Co-2, the COVID-19. The use of Chloroquine associates with a decreased duration of the virus’s symptoms. It is entirely promising since the CNHC or China National Health Commission already included it in their drug and treatment guidelines. Hydroxychloroquine, which contains a relatively high potency in treating COVID-19 compared to Chloroquine, reaches more clinical attention. However, there is no published supporting data that can back up this claim. If in case there are some, those are pretty limited.

Lopinavir/ Ritonavir – These two types of drugs appear to have little to no role in the treatment of Coronavirus infection. However, the combined Proteus inhibitor, which is primarily used for treating HIV infections, has in-vitro activity against SARS. Thus, it becomes the reason to consider Lopinavir/ Ritonavir to be included in the possible drugs for COVID-19. But most clinicians do want to consider it as practical use for hospitalized patients with severe Coronavirus cases. Unfortunately, the setting is unclear as of date because there is no clinical improvement. Aside from that, these drugs do not show promise in the recent scientific trial in China, where they test recent pneumonia cases in a limited number of patients.

All these drugs may show valuable results. But it is important to note that you can’t take it directly from the counter.

The Toxic Side Of Self-Development

In the last 2019 trauma conference, I wanted people to think that the way I am handling myself after a painful loss is now better than before. I decided to forward to visualizing my ambitions and goals. I started reading a lot of books, I also managed to eat healthy foods, and I tried exercising more. I felt more confident and motivated compared to the last time I checked myself. I told myself that this is it. I am now progressing and developing by taking positive actions. Everything was perfect. That was at least what I thought.

The world of self-development already changed a lot of things in my life. However, contrary to what other people think, it is not butterflies and roses. Self-development also has its glaring issues that I had to overcome face-to-face, and it is not easy. Sometimes, instead of things motivating you, self-help can destroy your emotional and mental capabilities. That is because of the process of forcing yourself to become better even if you already tried enough. You will still want more because you do not understand the level of contentment and satisfaction you have had to experience. Therefore, even if you focused on doing productive things in life, you still end up empty and mind-boggled with all the pain and suffering from the past.

Improving your life after a traumatic situation is entirely challenging. That is especially when you want to prove something to yourself. You may understand the necessary actions you have to take to achieve overall improved health. But you also need to consider the process of maybe giving up and changing everything for the sake of creating a better you. There are no short-cuts in self-development, and that is the first thing you should need to consider. After understanding that, that is the time you can slowly begin the process of altering your life.

Madagascar Herbal Remedy That Promises To Cure COVID-19

After the Coronavirus outbreak, medical experts in the pharmaceutical fields all over the world are trying their best to come up with a cure. Whether it can be a vaccine or any other type of drug. However, since no one expects the fast-approaching spread of the diseases, an expert can only contribute to the study of the cause of the virus and compare it to the previous ones that affect lives in the past years. However, to every country’s different testing and experiments, one country claimed to have found a cure.

Will It Be The One To Stop COVID-19?

Madagascar’s President Andry Rajoelina, along with the country’s Institute for Applied Research (IMRA), recently unveiled a cure to the Coronavirus diseases. COVID-Organics, or most known as CVO, is a bottled drink derived from Artemisia plant that widely grows in Madagascar. It is a plant used for a wide range of medicinal purposes across Africa’s country. In some studies, other species of the said herbal plant proved to contain anti-malarial properties as well.

According to the makers of the herbal product, CVO promises to both cure and prevent COVID-19 infections. It was said that all trials and tests conducted were effective and reliable in eliminating the signs and symptoms of the Coronavirus. However, not all people are interested and convinced by the new COVID-19 cure. And despite the government’s consistent promotion of the herbal product, the world has no interest in it. Because aside from having only a little available information about the herbal drink, the World Health Organization and other big pharmaceutical companies see no relation of this herbal medicine in curing the COVID-19 virus. That is because there have not yet been any scientific proof that the herbal remedy can surely cure patients with COVID-19 infections, let alone prevent people from getting infected.

However, since April 22 of this year, the CVO Company already handed out the herbal products for free to most schools in Madagascar. It has become a requirement for all students to consume it. The schools’ principals and heads agreed to the obligatory consumption because they believed it is their duty to introduce and encourage students to appreciate the benefits of the said herbal remedy. And for the parents of the students, well not all of them instantly agreed on the obligatory consumption. Other parents are still hesitant until now, while some already allowed their kids to try it.

The Current Status Of The Herbal COVID-19 Remedy

It was believed that Madagascar’s Academy of Medicine already warned the public of the products’ mass distribution. Health professionals emphasize that there is no scientific evidence that proves the drink to be effective. And at some point, consuming it will more likely cause actual health problems, particularly to children. The academy was firm on their stance on that one, but not after meeting with the president. And now, they managed to provide a different approach to CVO. That the academy does not entirely oppose the use and consumption of the herbal product, however, they pointed out that they leave the judgments to the people and reminded them to submit to compliance with an indicated dosage. That is mainly for children.

Whether there is entirely a benefit to this CVO production, a lot of people are still not convinced by it. They somehow called out the government by putting too much effort into promoting it as laudable as possible, especially to overcome the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts believe that this situation is a health problem. Thus cure should be based on the medical analysis.
